How to Care for Leather Boots
A great pair of leather boots is an investment. With the right care, boots like Red Wing’s Iron Ranger or Moc Toe will last decades — developing a rich patina that tells the story of every mile walked. At Sir James Roermond, we believe in buying well and caring properly. Here’s our complete guide to leather boot care.
What You Need
Before you start, gather the right tools. For most heritage leather boots you’ll need a stiff brush for dirt removal, a soft horsehair brush for buffing, a clean cloth, leather conditioner or oil appropriate for your leather type, and a boot tree to maintain shape during storage.
Step 1 — Clean Your Boots
Remove the laces and use a stiff brush to remove loose dirt and debris from the upper, welt and sole. For stubborn dirt, use a slightly damp cloth. Never soak leather in water — this can cause cracking and staining. Allow the boots to dry naturally at room temperature, away from direct heat sources like radiators.
Step 2 — Condition the Leather
Once clean and dry, apply a leather conditioner appropriate for your boot’s leather type. Different leathers require different products.
Oil-Tanned Leather (e.g. Red Wing Moc Toe)
Use Red Wing’s All Natural Boot Oil or Neatsfoot oil. Apply sparingly with a cloth, work into the leather in circular motions and allow to absorb for several hours.
Chrome-Tanned Leather (e.g. Red Wing Iron Ranger)
Use Red Wing’s Leather Conditioner or a quality beeswax-based product. Avoid heavy oils which can over-soften chrome-tanned leather.
Roughout & Suede Leather
Use a suede brush and a specialist roughout conditioner. Avoid standard leather oils — they will darken and flatten the nap permanently.
Step 3 — Protect
After conditioning, apply a water-resistant product if needed. Red Wing’s Boot Cream or Mink Oil provides good protection for most leathers. Allow to dry fully before wearing.
Step 4 — Polish (Optional)
For a shine on smooth leathers, apply a matching shoe cream or wax polish with a soft cloth, buff with a horsehair brush. Oil-tanned leathers generally do not take a high shine — this is intentional and part of their character.
Storage & Maintenance
Always store leather boots on boot trees to maintain their shape and absorb moisture. Keep them in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. Re-condition every 1–3 months depending on how often you wear them.
Frequently Asked Questions
How often should I condition leather boots?
For boots worn regularly, condition every 4–6 weeks. For occasional wear, every 2–3 months is sufficient. If the leather looks dry or starts to crack, condition immediately.
Can I use any oil on Red Wing boots?
No — use products recommended for your specific leather type. Red Wing produces their own care range designed for each leather they use. Using the wrong product can damage the leather.
How do I remove salt stains from leather boots?
Mix equal parts white vinegar and water, apply with a cloth and allow to dry. Then condition the leather as normal.
Can I waterproof leather boots?
Yes — use a beeswax-based product or specialist waterproofing spray. Note that heavy waterproofing can darken some leathers.
